Gnarly Head 2007 Old Vine Zin California

Tasty and cheap, but check the review for perhaps a few better choices.

It’s a clear, bright medium ruby to violet colored wine with a bit of structure to it. There is plenty of berry notes for your nose and palette with some spicy undernotes too. What’s also here is a bit of harshness thanks to some tannins, even with aeration. This gives the wine a somewhat less smooth taste than say Cline Old Vine Zinfandel. The balance is ok and the finish medium. A good sipping wine and it could work for dinner too.

"As the truch pulled up to the 80 year old zinfandel vineyard, my first impressiong was, 'wow, those vines sure have some gnarly heads!' Thus began my love affair with Old Vine Zinfandel. Lodi has some of the oldest vines in California. Unlike modern rows of trellised vines, these old Zinfandel vines were grown as free standing 'head trained' vines. Today the resemble wild bushes with twisted trunks and branches that spread out in all directions sprouting leaves like umbrellas -- truly 'Gnarly Heads.' " ... there's more but you get the idea.
